This palette is probably the closest I will come to doing this. At least any time soon. Looking at the color story, the title makes sense. It really does remind you of a beach sunset.
For all practical purposes, I should love this palette. The packaging is gorgeous (love the tropical plants, the new packaging is nice too), the formula is very good (not BH’s best, but good), and I love a neutral palette. So I should love this one. But I don’t. I like it. I might say that I like…like it. But I cannot say that I love it.
The Basics
Hangin’ in Hawaii is part of BH Cosmetic’s “travel” palette series. (Passion in Paris, Lost in Los Angeles.) On the creative cuteness scale….10 out of 10. You know I LOVE a good theme. I have heard great things about this series. This is however the only one I have actually tried. If I was going to try another one, I would get Smitten in Switzerland😉😋.

You get 16 shades….11 mattes and 5 shimmers. BH rarely puts any glitters in their palettes, which in my opinion is a good thing. (Just my opinion.) As stated earlier, this palette is described as “capturing the essence of a tropical paradise” with “warm oranges and pink neutrals.” I agree, like I said…it’s a beach sunset. Pour yourself a Pina colada and enjoy!
The Packaging
I actually have the old packaging. It has since been re-done. I was told however, that the formula is the same. Otherwise, I would not be writing this. I have never had an issue with BH’s packaging. (Unlike those who shall remain nameless…Colourpop). It’s usually a sturdy cardboard. This is no exception, and it has a cute mirror. I love BH’s attention to detail. The old packaging had tropical plants. The new palette has the ocean.
The Shades
This is definitely a matte friendly palette. More than half the shades are mattes. I prefer shimmers, but that’s just personal preference. And the mattes are really good. Very smooth and blendable. Not at all patchy. Are the shades too close in color? When you have 11 mattes in the same color story, I’m not sure if that is a fair question. Some of them are similar. But overall, I think they did a pretty good job. The problem here is the shades themselves. They definitely could have gone deeper. Honolulu is the deepest shade in the palette, and it’s much deeper in the pan than it is swatched out, as you can see. Keep in mind that I am very pale.
The Shimmers
Chances are you have these colors somewhere. Go look. I’ll hold. The shimmers are pretty, don’t get me wrong. They are smooth and pair well with the mattes. This is a rare shimmer formula that I feel applies better with a brush. (As opposed to a finger). I also feel that they swatch a little better than they wear. But don’t get me wrong, overall they are nice. To me the stand out shade is Luau. When you pair this shimmer with some of the more coral mattes, like hibiscus or lei, you do get those tropic vibes.
Wearablility
This is the palette that broke the system, my system anyway. If you missed it, check out my rating blog here…https://myeyeshadowallergy.com/the-system-is-broken/. The abridged version is that I have been rating my palettes on wearability alone. This palette wore just fine. I had no reaction. Would I tell you to run out and buy this palette? I’m not sure. Usually I have an answer to that question. Even though it really didn’t excite me, it is by no means a bad palette. It did however get me to thinking, what if I did come across a horrible palette, that was wearable for me….meaning no allergic reaction. how would I rate that? And so my new system was born. To reiterate, this palette wore fine. No reactions what so ever.
Conclusion
For the first time I find myself doing a re-write. Maybe because I’m staring at this picture. Am I all of a sudden into pink and orange? I’ll give you my original ending….This palette has beautiful Hawaiian vibes, but since it is not actually going to take you there, you can probably skip it. I’ll change it to this….this palette is not a great neutral palette, there are much better ones out there. However, if you are looking for something more on the orangey pink side….I might pick this one up. It really is a nice combination. Keep in mind it’s lack of depth. And the fact that you will not wake up on a beach in Maui😋
