Eyeshadow Lingo

Crease – The skin just above the eyelid.

Cream – Eyeshadow in cream form usually in a pot. Comes in both matte and shimmery formulas. Some people use these under powder shadows to intensify the look or as a primer.

Cut the Crease – To define your eyelid by drawing a line across the middle crease of your eyelid. This is sometimes done with concealer.

Duochrome – An eyeshadow which can appear two different colors depending on how the light hits it.

Eyelid – The largest area of the eye right under the crease. (Where most of us put the shimmer)

Fall out – When eyeshadow falls on the face. Some eyeshadow has more than others. You can decrease fallout by tapping your brush before you apply your shadow.

Highlight – Usually a lightly shimmered natural shade applied under the brow bone to give it a lifted look.

Inner Corner – Inner most area of the eye, near the tear duct. (Another area that gets a highlighter)

Liquid – A liquid eyeshadow usually has a shimmery finish. I personally do not like them as they do not typically blend well, and they crease (on me anyway)

Lower Lash Line – Area under the bottom lashes. Take a pencil brush and get as creative as you want.

Matte – Eyeshadow that has no shine.

Matte Sparkle – Literally a matte color with sparkle in it. I feel like these are also called something else, but I can’t think of it right now. These shades are aesthetically pleasing in the pan, but I personally do no like them on the eyes.

Metallic – Shadows that have a metal finish.

Multichrome – An eyeshadow that can shift from 3 to 4 colors depending on how the light hits it.

Outer V – The outer corner of the eye, from the lash line to the crease. ( Also known as the outer 7)

Pan – Literally the pan that contains the shadow. (To hit pan, Pan that shadow)

Payoff – How intense (or not intense) the color is

Powder – Can be pressed or loose. Typically blends well (unless it’s a ****show of a shadow) Most eyeshadows are powder

Pressed Glitter – A glitter mix that is used as eyeshadow. (It is not straight glitter.) Sometimes requires a glitter glue.

Satin – Not quite a matte. Not quite a shimmer. Somewhere in the middle

Shimmer – Sparkling shadows used for highlighting and lid shades. The pretty ones….my favorite.

Waterline – Area inside the lower eyelid. Some people use a pencil here, sometimes in a white shade. I leave the waterline alone.

Transition area – Area of the eyelid above the crease

Transition shade – A color that works to merge two contrasting colors together
