If I were to say stone cold, what would pop into your head? The Demi Lovato song? Wrestler Steve Austin? If you’re me its the Stone Cold Fox, colourpop’s answer to the cool toned trend. If I’m not mistaken I believe this came out around the same time as Natasha Denona’s Glam Palette, although I am pretty sure the Glam was first.
Stone Cold Fox is the sister palette to Bare Necessities (which pulls much warmer). For $34.00 you get 30 shades….17 mattes, 9 metallics, and 4 matte sparkles. Matte sparkles have another name, I want to say micro glitter but I’m not sure. I hate these types of shades which are basically matte shades with some glitter. Colourpop is kind of known for them, they definitely add more to their palettes than I have seen with other brands. I will post separately about Colourpop as a brand, and their love for all things glitter. Getting back to stone cold, not too many Colourpop launches get me excited anymore, but when I saw this one, I knew I had to have it. I loved cool tones, even before they became popular. The reviews on this one were pretty good. It made it to the top tier of a lot of best palette 2020 lists and to the very top of a lot of Colourpop rankings. No matter who said what, I was going to get it. And hope it worked for me.
Colourpop has a great formula, and this palette was no exception. There are some very close shades in this one. Even more so than in Bare Necessities. When you have 30 shades in a palette, that is bound to happen. It doesn’t bother me, but I know it bothers some people, so I feel it’s worth mentioning. Can I tell you the only thing that bothered me about this palette? The packaging. No the shadows did not fall out of the pan upon opening (if you are a frequent purchaser of Colourpop palettes you know what I am talking about, and if you are not, I will explain in my next blog). This packaging is pretty sturdy in that aspect. What bothered me is that these palettes get so dirty! (Stone Cold and Bare Necessities). They are also really hard to clean. Is it the material of the packaging? I guess so. Am I the only one that thinks this? Maybe. Its not a big deal. Just me and my ocd.
Do you need both palettes? That is up to you. If you like cool tones go for Stone Cold, if you like warm tones you would be better with Bare Necessities. If you like both, you might want both. To me the shades are quite different. What I will say about these palettes is that if you are the type of person who only wants one or two palettes, either of these could work as your neutral palette. They both got the bases covered.
Now for the wear test. Everly palette has that one shade that you just cannot wait to try. For me, for this palette, that shade was Magnetic Moon. That gorgeous silver metallic shade that catches your eye as soon as you open this palette. The first few hours…no problem. Then, that dreaded feeling. The itching, the burning, the I need to get this off. This shade is so gorgeous, I actually tried it twice. You know the definition of insanity. My second favorite shade from this palette is Sediment To Be. This was another bad experience. I put this palette away, and took it out a few days later, trying one shade at a time. I am actually able to wear the entire first row…from So Fine to Mystery. After that, things started to go down hill. Stone Age, U Rock, Hard Place, Caving In and Play it Coal were all shades that I cannot wear. If I did not feel that I would ever be able to find some neutral shades that could work for me, maybe I would consider keeping this palette for that first row. However, I know that is not the case, so for me this palette just is not worth it.
The bottom line is this (yes I am a Steve Austin fan, no I could not resist) I think this is a near perfect palette for someone that can wear it. The price, the formula, the shades, everything is great. No, I am not a fan of the packaging, but so what. If you are looking for a cool toned palette, I don’t think you can go wrong. For me and my nickel allergy it just didn’t work out. I shall not be a stone cold fox.
Have you ever tried this palette? How did it work for you? Are there any Colourpop palettes that you can wear? Can’t wear?
